Open Meeting: Auf Wiedersehen, Deutsch?

The decline of German as a Foreign Language in the English education system

For our May 2017 Open Meeting we invite you to join us for a special guest talk by Dr John Goodyear (Oldenburg) who will give a talk on “The decline of German as a Foreign Language in the English education system”. Taking his personal experience as a learner of German in England in the 1990s as his starting point, John will look at the decline in numbers of learners of German as a foreign language in English schools in recent years and will ask how this squares with the increasingly positive perception of all things German in the UK in recent times. Will it really be “Auf Wiedersehen, Deutsch” in a few years in England?

John studied German in Birmingham and London and is Director of Studies of the Academy of English in Oldenburg. As an Anglo-German intercultural practitioner, he is also involved as a volunteer motivational speaker in the Inspiring the Future and the Speak to the Future campaigns in the UK, successfully touring English secondary schools in England promoting the benefits of learning German as a Foreign Language. John has recently established the Graham Newson Travel Memorial Fund in his late German teacher’s name to give English school children, aged 14-19, valuable work experience in Germany.

The talk will be given in English, followed by a discussion in either English or German.
Entry is free, all are welcome.
